This one lived up to the hype. Cincinnati catchers were the heroes in this eleven-inning battle which saw the Reds come out on top, 8 to 7. Johnny Bench slugged a pair of home runs and Pat Corrales, who took over for John in the late innings, hit a game winning double in the bottom of the eleventh.

New York 4 Baltimore 5

Oriole backstop, Elrod Hendricks was the star, as Baltimore beat New York, 5 to 4. Ellie blasted a three-run, homer in the eighth inning and also had a rbi single.

Oakland 4 Minnesota 2

WP- Chuck Dobson (3-1) LP- Jim Katt (3-3) SV- Mudcat Grant (4)

HR- Rick Monday (3)

Minnesota’s Tony Oliva committed a two-base error in the first inning, which led to three Oakland runs. The Athletics finished with a 4 to 2 win over the Twins.

Pittsburgh 8 Los Angeles 6

WP- Bruce Del Canton (1-2) LP- Ray Lamb (3-3) SV- Dave Giusti (6)

HR- Roberto Clemente (5), Bob Robertson (3)

Trailing, 5 to 3, Pittsburgh used a five-run, eighth inning to push past Los Angeles, as they went on to an 8 to 6 victory over the Dodgers. L. A. had three triples in the loss.

Game #46 Recap:

Baltimore has opened up a three-game lead on Boston, winning their last three games, while the Red Sox have dropped three in a row. There are ten games left in the season. Boston fell to Cincinnati, with Johnny Bench’s two home runs now tying him with Oakland’s Don Mincher, for the league lead with 12. Baltimore snapped the Yankees’ five-game win streak, with a huge, 5 to 4 win. The Orioles and Red Sox are clearly the class of the league, as the closest teams to them are Minnesota and New York, both playing .500 ball, tied for third place. Bobby Tolan added a couple percentage points on his batting average, which leads the league by a comfortable margin. He also leads in hits, stolen bases and is tied for the league lead in runs, with Carl Yastrzemski. Gary Peters had a no-decision against the Reds, so was unable to win his tenth game. He has a three-game lead in wins and though his ERA took a bit of a hit, it’s still excellent, at 2.21.
