The Reds gave the Orioles all they could handle, but in the end, Baltimore earned their fourth straight win, with an 8 to 6 victory over Cincinnati. There were five total home runs hit in this game, led by Frank Robinson’s grand slam in the third inning.

Los Angeles 4 Boston 8

HR- Rico Petrocelli 2(11), Tony Conigliaro (9), Carl Yastrzemski (8).

Boston picked up a crucial win against the fading Dodgers, 8 to 4. The Red Sox belted four big flies, two by Rico Petrocelli. Boston remains three back of Baltimore.

Minnesota 1 Pittsburgh 0

WP- Bert Blyleven (3-3) LP- Bob Veale (3-5)

Minnesota’s Bert Blyleven tossed his first shutout of the season, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1 to 0. He allowed just five hits, striking out ten, while walking none. Bob Veale was no slouch for the Pirates. He worked seven innings, allowing just the one run, on six hits. He fanned ten and walked one.

New York 2 Oakland 1 Ten Innings

HR- Bobby Murcer (7); Bert Campaneris (9)

In the day’s only extra inning affair, Bobby Murcer’s solo home run in the top of the tenth was the difference, as the Yankees defeated Oakland, 2 to 1.

Game #47 Recap:

The standings order remains the same, as Baltimore and Boston both won. The Red Sox remain three games behind. The Orioles have won four in a row. The Dodgers have dropped three games straight.

Individually, not much has changed, though Rico Petrocelli’s two home runs against Los Angeles gives him 11 on the year, putting him one back of leaders, Johnny Bench and Don Mincher. Also, Bert Campaneris has hit an impressive, nine home runs from the leadoff spot.
