The Dodgers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, when Steve Garvey doubled, Willie Crawford tripled and Bill Sudakis hit a sacrifice fly for a 2 to 0 L.A. lead. Baltimore got a run in the second and two more in the third, to take the lead. Paul Blair added a solo homerun in the sixth, to make it 4 to 2, Orioles and that’s how the game ended.
Boston 0 New York 3

HR- Roy White (7)
New York’s Steve Kline grinded out a 3 to 0 complete game win, earning his first shutout on the season. Boston outhit the Yankees, 8-5, however, Kline fanned five and didn’t walk a single batter. Danny Cater was 1 for 2, with two walks. Boston’s Mike Nagy lasted just five innings, and Red Sox pitchers threw three wild pitches. Roy White hit his seventh homerun.
Cincinnati 0 Minnesota 3
WP- Bill Zepp (4-3) LP- Tony Cloninger (1-3)
The day’s second shutout belongs to Bill Zepp of Minnesota, who blanked the Cincinnati Reds, 3 to 0. As with Steve Kline, it was Zepp’s first whitewash. All three Twins runs came in the fourth inning. Minnesota loaded the bases with one out, then Rick Renick hit a sacrifice fly. Danny Thompson hit a two-run double, scoring two more runs, before Jim Holt lined out to end the inning.
Pittsburgh 3 Oakland 1

The Pittsburgh Pirates had a 3 to 1, comeback win against the Oakland Athletics. Trailing 1-0, the Bucs’ Bob Robertson drew a seventh inning walk, then Richie Hebner tripled. A Dave Cash single plated Hebner for the second run of the inning. Then in the top of the ninth, Dave Cash hit a three bagger, and was driven in by a pinch-hit single by Jose Pagan.

Game #52. Recap:
Baltimore has reduced their magic number to one. If they defeat the Yankees in their next game, or, if Boston loses to Cincinnati, the Orioles will be Champions of the Great Eight League for 1970.
Cincinnati and Los Angeles had to start their backups due to a long extra inning game prior to this one and it showed. The Reds were shutout by the Twins and the Dodgers lost to the Orioles.
There is a tremendous race on for the batting title. Cincinnati’s Bobby Tolan has struggled of late and is now hitting .349, just two tenths percentage points above New York’s Danny Cater, who’s red hot hitting has him at .347. There were just two homeruns today. Reggie Jackson still leads teammate, Don Mincher by one. Tolan is still leading in hits but has fallen back in runs and doubles. Today’s games had two shutouts pitched. The Yankees’ Steve Kline and Oakland’s Diego Segui have been terrific as #4 pitchers in their respective rotations. Much better than the “Aces”, who will pitch in game #53.
