The Yankees’ Fritz Peterson outdueled Baltimore’s Jim Palmer, as New York won a 1-0 pitcher’s duel. Peterson pitched seven scoreless innings, then Lindy McDaniel and Jack Aker put up zeroes in the eighth and ninth, respectively. New York’s lone run came when Pete Ward tripled in the fifth, then scored on Danny Cater’s sacrifice fly.
Cincinnati 1 Boston 5

HR- Carl Yastrezmski 2 (10)
Ray Culp and Yaz were the heroes, in a 5 to 1, Red Sox win over Cincinnati. Culp tossed a complete game and Yaz belted a two run and three run homeruns, accounting for all of Boston’s tallies.
Los Angeles 1 Pittsburgh 4

Pittsburgh scored a run in the first and second innings, then added two more in the seventh to defeat Los Angeles, 4 to 1.
Minnesota 2 Oakland 3 Ten Innings

HR- Dave Duncan (3)
Jim Perry was two outs away from a shutout win, when he gave up a walk to Reggie Jackson, then a home run to Dave Duncan, which tied the game. In the bottom of the tenth, Cesar Tovar made a two-base error, reaching second with one out. A Barber wild pitch moved Tovar to third, who then scored the winning run on a Joe Rudi sacrifice fly, giving the Athletics, a 3 to 2, victory.

Game #53 Recap:
Boston remains alive, thanks to their 5 to 1 win over Cincinnati. Couple that with the Orioles 1-0 loss to the Yankees and Baltimore’s magic number remains at one. There are three games left in the season.
Pittsburgh beating Los Angeles, means those two teams are now tied for last place, with identical, 22 and 31 records. New York has put together a three-game win streak, while Cincinnati has dropped four in a row.
Bobby Tolan had the day off in the Reds game and the Yankees’ Danny Cater went 0-3. That means Tolan in leading the batting race at .350, while Don Buford has overtaken Cater. Buford is second at .343, while Cater is hitting .341. The home run race is unchanged. Jack Aker and Dave Giusti are leading in saves with eight each.
