Team Breakdowns Oakland Athletics

W 28 L 28 .500 Pct Fourth Place

Oakland started the season very poorly, winning only 3 of their first 15 games. They had a much better second half, to finish with a .500 record. They were exactly as bad at home (11-17), as they were good on the road (17-11) The team put together a 6-game win streak at one point in the season.

Individually, Don Mincher (.264/.333/.528) Bert Campaneris (.270/.304/.491) had the best years. Bert also had 12 homeruns and 7 stolen bases from the leadoff spot. Power was not a problem for the Athletics, who led the league in homeruns by a team with 75, beating out Boston by 1. They had four regulars in double figures. Mincher (13), Jackson and Campaneris (12 each) and Bando (11). Gene Tenace almost made it five players, as he hit 9.

Diego Segui, the #4 man in the rotation, had probably the best year (7-4, 2.72 ERA, 1.25 WHIP). The bullpen had some tough luck losses, with Grant, Lindblad and Lachemann all losing two games each, but Grant and Lachemann’s WHIP were both under 1.00 and Lindblad’s was 1.08. Grant led in saves with four.
