1956 Great Eight League

Opening Day Results:

Boston 4 Brooklyn 7

WP- Don Newcombe (1-0) LP- Frank Sullivan (0-1) SV- Clem Labine (1)

HR- Roy Campanella (grand slam) (1); Jackie Jensen 2 (2), Don Buddin (1)

Boston got on the board first, when Jackie Jensen hit the first of his two solo homeruns in the top of the second inning. The Red Sox gave it right back and more, when Sullivan walked the bases full, then gave up a grand slam to Roy Campanella. The Dodgers got what would prove to be the winning run in the third. It was unearned, thanks to a Sammy White error.

Chicago 8 New York 0

WP- Billy Pierce (1-0) LP- Johnny Kucks (0-1)

HR- Larry Doby (1)

The White Sox embarrassed the Yankees in their home opener, as Billy Pierce logged the league’s first shutout, in an 8-0 pasting. Nellie Fox, Minnie Minoso and Walt Dropo had three hits apiece, while Larry Doby had a homer and three runs batted in.

Cincinnati 1 Milwaukee 3

WP- Warren Spahn (1-0) LP- Joe Nuxhall (0-1)

HR- Joe Nuxhall (1)

If not for mound opponent, Joe Nuxhall, running into a hanging curveball; Warren Spahn would have had the day’s second whitewash. Nuxhall’s homer was Cincy’s lone run in a 3 to 1 Braves win. Like Spahn, Nuxie only allowed five hits, but he issued six free passes and the Reds made two errors.

Cleveland 1 Detroit 5

WP- Frank Lary (1-0) LP- Bob Lemon (0-1)

HR- Al Kaline (1), Ray Boone (1); Vic Wertz (1)

In a game very similar to the Milwaukee- Cincinnati contest, winning pitcher, Frank Lary of the Tigers allowed just one hit on a home run. In this case, it was hit by Cleveland’s Vic Wertz. The Bengal bats were led by Kaline, who was 3 for 4, with a homerun.
