A good pitcher’s duel, in which Don Sutton came out on top over Pittsburgh’s Dock Ellis. Sutton went the distance for the Dodgers, who got the first run of the game on a Willie Davis sacrifice fly in the fifth. Willie Stargell tied it with a solo homer in the seventh. L.A. scratched across a run in the eighth and held on for the win.

WP- Catfish Hunter (2-3) LP- Luis Tiant (0-1) SV- Jim Roland (1)

HR- Sal Bando (6), Bert Campaneris (1); Cesar Tovar (3)

Red hot Oakland took advantage of a mandatory spot starter for Minnesota, in the form of Luis Tiant. He was no match for the Athletics, allowing six runs in just four and two third innings. Bando and Campy went deep for Oakland, Tovar for the Twins.

Game 25 Recap:

Cincy beat Boston in a battle of the first and second place teams, closing the margin to one game, yet again. The Red Sox have led the whole way thus far. Cincinnati has closed to within one game several times but as yet, has not been able to even tie for first place. Baltimore is hanging around, two games behind the Red Sox. L.A. and N.Y. have the same record but are heading in opposite directions as far as wins and losses. Oakland remains on fire, having won six in a row. Pittsburgh, on the other hand has been playing terrible ball and are in sole possession of last place. On an individual level. Reggie Smith of Boston is suddenly all over the leaderboard. His four for five effort certainly helped. There were two home runs in game 25 by unlikely sources. Dave Concepcion and Horace Clarke each homered off their own cards on HR-1-5 and 1-3, respectively. This was also a spot start game. The Twins got the nod with Luis Tiant getting a loss in his spot start.
