The Red Sox tagged winless Claude Osteen, for five runs, in just three innings, as Boston defeated Los Angeles, 5 to 1. Reggie Smith was three for five for the Red Sox.

HR- Boog Powell (3)
Boog Powell’s three run blast in the first inning was the big blow, as the Orioles dispatched the Reds, 4 to 2. Dave McNally went the distance for Baltimore.
Oakland 7 New York 8 Eleven innings

HR- Jake Gibbs (2), Jim Lytle (1); Don Mincher (5), Reggie Jackson (8)
Thurman Munson hit a pinch-hit double in the bottom of the eleventh inning, then Roy White drove him in as the Yankees won in extra innings over the Athletics, by a score of 8 to 7.
Pittsburgh 3 Minnesota 4

HR- Harmon Killebrew (3)
The Twins escaped some ninth inning drama and held off the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4 to 3, at home. Harmon Killebrew clubbed a three-run homer in the bottom of the first. The Bucs scored a run in the ninth off Stan Williams, but Ron Perranowski came in and got the final two outs to earn the save.

Boston won and Cincinnati lost, giving the Crimson Hose a two-game advantage. Baltimore is now tied for second place. The Yankees put an end to Oakland’s win streak. Pittsburgh continues to flounder. Reggie Smith has taken over the batting lead and Reggie Jackson has tied Johnny Bench for the home run lead.
