Team Breakdowns Minnesota Twins

29W 27L .518Pct Tied for Third Place

Minnesota finished tied for third place with New York, behind Baltimore and Boston. They were slightly better at home than on the road. The best they could do in terms of winning streaks was five games.

Offensively, the Twins’ best players were Rod Carew (.333/.400/.407), Cesar Tovar (.325/.383/.481), Tony Oliva (.290/.314/.429) and Brant Alyea (.283/.329/.552). Power was at a minimum on this team, with Alyea’s 11 homeruns, the only double figure effort.

Harmon Killebrew was a huge disappointment. He only had 8 home runs and slashed a putrid (.193/.226/.357). He was a liability defensively as well. Also having a poor year was regular shortstop, Leo Cardenas. He led the team in errors with eight, albeit at a tough position. He slashed (.171/.229/.246)

As far as pitching, Jim Perry was the best starter. (6-5, 2.24 ERA, 1.08 WHIP). He had two complete games and fanned 56 batters against 15 walks. Bill Zepp and Bert Blyleven each had a shutout.
